Pool Lifeguard courses in Ireland are run by two governing bodies, the Royal Lifesaving Society / IQL under the name NPLQ / National Pool Lifeguard Training Programme, and Irish Water Safety under the name National Pool Guard.

The Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS), also known as Lifesavers, has a wide range of lifesaving and water safety awards in addition to Lifeguarding qualifications. The R.L.S.S. is the largest international organisation of its kind in the world and operates in over 60 countries worldwide. Programmes include Pool Life Guard, Beach Life Guard and Lifeguard Powerboat courses & awards. Their awarding body, the Institute of Qualified Lifeguards UK or IQL UK, is responsible for maintaining the standards expected in life guard courses.

Irish Water Safety (IWS) also run pool lifeguard  and beach lifeguard (known as poolguard and beachguard). I.W.S.  is the Irish Government’s training body established to promote water safety in Ireland. IWS also develop public awareness campaigns.

Coastguard and RNLI are also major players in Water safety in Ireland but do not deliver lifeguard training.
